Areas that you specialise in and why you choose this practice area
My main practice area is civil and commercial litigation and I also do some family and criminal defence work. I enjoy the challenges of litigation and I like my current portfolio as it offers me exposure to a broad range of work.
What made you want to be a lawyer and what drives you today
I wanted to do something intellectually challenging and legal practice definitely ticks that box. I also like the fact that my work essentially involves dispute resolution, which is inherently fulfilling. I think the practice of law (especially litigation) requires an understanding of human motivation, human weaknesses and human emotion, which keeps things very real and meaningful.
Common misconceptions about your practice area
That litigation lawyers are often sharks and are blood thirsty beings. In actual fact, we are people who care about our clients and advocate for the best interests of our clients, although sometimes it may be difficult.
If you were to start a business someday, what would it be and why?
I want to start a business that helps people schedule their appointments in a smart way (e.g. prompting events, family events, friends’ gatherings, and trial dates!). One of my pet peeves is when people claim that they do not have enough time for all the important things in life.
Your most prized possession
Perhaps my mind, because I think we can do almost anything when we set our mind to it. Otherwise, I am not attached to material possessions so nothing else really comes to mind.
Fitness enthusiast
I enjoy challenging myself and pushing my limits – I compete in triathlons and enjoy the rigorous training that it entails. I race about 20 times a year, and have qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships thrice. On average, I swim 6 – 8km, cycle 150 – 200km and run 40 – 50 km a week.
I have a blog where I share more about what I do and my race results. I was also featured in a Straits Times article earlier this year.
3 fun facts about you
- I am a huge history and mythology buff. I enjoy reading about the Early Modern period of European history, and I love Greek, Egyptian and Norse mythology.
- I took a gap year after graduating from law school and spent the year competing in triathlons around the world. I survived on prize money and when I was back home in Singapore, I worked as a personal trainer for additional income. It was tough but probably the best experience of my life so far.
- I enjoy traveling to new places in an unconventional way, usually to the horror and aghast to some of my traveling mates. I don’t usually have a scheduled landmark list that I need to see and enjoy wandering around the area even if I am lost. Also, I walk everywhere – even if I’ve run for 2 hours earlier that morning.
